something a bit different – compiled but not mixed – show 1
I met Matt Wills through Nobbie Q. I said the three of us could load up at my place in the Annex before heading down to catch John Digweed spin at Rebel. When they arrived, I offered coffee. They declined; they had something else in mind.
I put on Drab Majesty’s new album. My friend Simon called this the best album of 2017. I can see why. It’s a beautiful new retro-style Cure-influenced bit of indie darkwave that makes me feel like if I wanted to buy black lipstick and put it on in front of a mirror with clothespins on my nipples, that would be okay. I kept this to myself.
Eventually we got to my record collection. I told Matt and Nobbie that we should have a vinyl party at my place, where we all just get together and play some cool records. Nobbie’s all digital so he was out. But Matt was into it.
That was about three months ago.
The other day I got a text from Matt. He thought it was about time we did this vinyl party. Except not at my place. At CTRL ROOM.
“How many records should I bring?”
“20–30?”
“Okay.”
And that happened last Wednesday.
Hubert showed up in the middle and said it was refreshing to hear people playing music that wasn’t just house and techno. “You guys are playing good stuff.”
So he asked us if we wanted to do this once a month. How could we decline?
So now I’m running around from shop to shop looking for new records. “Vinyl only,” said Matt. I agree. And that’s why I’m pressing a one-off at the Dupe Shop of an extended edit of my new track, “Reduction.”
Last Wednesday of every month, it’s all about selection. It’s not about the mix. It’s just about what sounds good. Some great fucking music that we think people are really going to enjoy.
The search begins.
